rough drawings

I've been trying to develope a technique for storyboarding where I draw rough, but it's clean enough that I don't have to go back and clean it up. This is sort of how I've been drawing. It's really fun, and makes you a lot better at drawing, because you can't "find" the drawing in the clean up, you have to make really strong decisions from the beginning.

haven't posted in a while. here's a sketch.

So, for Flight 6, I decided to continue my last story from flight 3. Here is a warm up before I start drawing the pages.

Another Three Shadows

Three shadows

I just got a book called "Three Shadows" by Cyril Pedrosa. The story is very heartfelt and the drawings are some of the best I've ever seen. So, I decided to try and draw one of the characters from the book for this weeks model sheet drawing challenge.

Chun li

I've always wanted to do a street fighter comic.

I plan on spending 30 weeks on model sheet studies. The first one I did was Obelix. The second one I did was Asterix. This week, I’ve been doing Roger. My goal has been to spend one week on each character. I’ve been keeping a little sketchbook as well as doing larger cleaned up drawings. After the 30 weeks, I want to move onto doing some rough animation test on some of the characters I liked the best.

Bill girl

I saw this drawing on Bill Presing's site and I just had to try and draw the character, she looked like so much fun. Here is the link to Bill's drawing:

I went to a bootcamp workout class last night. I tried to remember two poses I saw. The one girl was like 6ft 5in tall.

I'm finally going to get back into comics. Here is the character I want to use. I just need to think of a 10 page story for him.

drawing kids, and skinny people is hard. Anytime you have a long skinny shape, it's hard to make it look nice.

Doddle the mole

Here is a really old character from a comic I never finished. If I could find a nice way to ink in photoshop, I would love to do another comic. Inking with a brush is murder on my wrist. Here is a cool photoshop brush.

New sketches

I've been drawing with a larger brush lately. it's a really nice way to simplify because the brush is too big to put any detail.

Wow, this makes drawing easier. It's really hard to force myself not to jump right into the detail, but this is taking so much of the struggle out of drawing. I normally would start with drawing 3, but then I'm working on construction, pose, anatomy, proportion, and line quality all at the same time. This way, I can worry 1st about the pose, then about the construction/anatomy, then about the line quality. If you can't tell, I'm a huge Ben Caldwell fan!

I've been trying to come up with a more methodical aproach to drawing. A way to take some of the frustration out of it. I'm trying to work from more simple shapes and then build up. If I can nail those initial shapes easily the rest of the drawing is much easier almost, dare I say it, enjoyable!
